As a Transit Officer, you’ll get serious training.

Training

In order to provide the best security system possible with a strong focus on customer service, all Transit Officers go through specialised training which includes an initial 12 week training course covering the following areas:

1. Security Studies and Self Defence Techniques

All training includes both theory and practical units which are:

  • Use of Force;
  • Application of Handcuffs;
  • Empty Hand Restraint Techniques;
  • Use of Batons; and
  • OC (Capsicum Spray) Training which is carried out according to Western Australia Police standards (this means that all Transit Officers go through the same type of training as WA Police would in using capsicum spray).

All Transit Officers are provided with a Refresher Course every 12 months and ongoing up-to-date training to ensure that Transit Officers are equipped with the most advanced skills required in their field.

2. Legal Studies

Transit Officers have legal authorities similar to Western Australia Police and they are expected to carry out their duties lawfully and responsibly at all times. All Transit Officers are required to be trained in these units:

  • Revenue Protection Procedures;
  • Managing Unlawful/Disruptive Behaviour;
  • Study of the Public Transport Authority Act 2003 and Regulations 2003;
  • Government Railways Act 1904;
  • Criminal Code;
  • Criminal Investigation (Identifying People) Act 2002;
  • Protective Custody Act;
  • Young Offenders Act 1994;
  • Preparing Court Briefs and Prosecution Notices / Summonses;
  • Presenting Evidence in Court, and
  • Lock-up Procedures and Search Techniques.

3. Occupational Health and Safety Studies

Transit Officers are trained to keep themselves and their working environment safe to the highest levels at all times. This is important because the nature of their work requires them to be involved in various high-risk or dangerous situations (such as getting on the track to help a passenger retrieve their wallet they dropped by accident).

This is an important part of a Transit Officer's role to enable them to do their work effectively in keeping passengers and PTA property safe. Their training includes:

  • Applying Safe Working Rules and Regulations (Track Accreditation);
  • Electrification Awareness;
  • First Aid;
  • Applying Accident and Emergency Procedures;
  • Fire Extinguisher Training;
  • Occupational Health and Safety Procedures / Ensuring Safe On-Board Passenger and Working Environment; and
  • Driving Vehicles.

4. Customer Service Studies

Transit Officers come in contact with passengers every day. It is important that Transit Officers have the skills to ensure that they provide the best customer service possible for passengers. This section of the training includes:

  • Creating Customer Relationship/Communicating with Suppliers;
  • Dealing with Customer Feedback;
  • Meeting Customer Needs and Expectations;
  • Addressing Customer Needs/Monitoring and working in a Socially Diverse Environment;
  • Disability Awareness;
  • Counter Terrorism Awareness; and
  • Drug Awareness.

5. Communications Studies

Good communication skills are required of Transit Officers. When carrying out their duties, Transit Officers will often have to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, liaise with various people such as police, ambulance officers, etc., write reports and use everyday communication tools such as radios.

All Transit Officers are trained in:

  • Using Communication Systems;
  • Basic Workplace Communications;
  • Basic Workplace Calculations;
  • Working Effectively with Others;
  • Preparing Workplace Documentation; and
  • Applying Quality Systems.

On successful completion of the training and assessment course, Transit Officers are awarded of a nationally recognized qualification - a Certificate III in Security Operations CPP30407.
