PTA's Purpose
As an organisation the Public Transport Authority aims to increase and encourage the use of public transport by providing customer-focused, safe and cost effective passenger transport services.
The Role and Responsibilities of a Transit Officer
The key role of our Transit Officers is to ensure that passengers are safe and secure while on the rail reserve. Transit Officers provide passengers with assistance and information, and perform regular ticket inspections to keep fare evasion to a minimum.
The nature of the position means that every working day is different. As a Transit Officer, you would use your skills, competence and training to carry out your responsibilities, which include:
- Circulating on trains and stations to maintain a safe, secure environment for passengers and performing regular ticket inspections,
- Providing passengers with information and assistance on the Urban Rail and the metropolitan bus and ferry services
- Giving First Aid in medical emergencies
- Handling customer complaints and enquiries in accordance with the Public Transport Authority's Customer Charter
- Carrying out regular ticket inspections as directed or as part of a team in accordance with procedures
- Interacting with passengers to promote a positive image of the Public Transport Authority and our services
- Working in a potentially high-pressure environment which may involve assisting emergency and safety control officers in emergencies, security or system failures or other instances.
- Preparing daily reports and compiling court briefs and statements of evidence.
- Reporting on the effectiveness of train/bus interchanges and assisting with the coordination of connecting services with local bus operators
- Complying with the requirements of upgrades and changes to fare, ticketing and system access technologies
- Carries out as directed, such tasks and functions that are within the limits of the employee's skills, competence and training.

Essential
Our Transit Officers must have:
- A good understanding of contemporary customer service techniques and how to apply these in a variety of relevant situations.
- Good interactive and interpersonal skills, with the ability to avoid conflicts and proven experience in conflict resolution.
- The ability to work as part of a team.
- Written and verbal communication skills to a level appropriate for the responsibilities of the position.
- Literacy (including basic computer literacy) and numeracy skills at a level adequate to perform daily duties.
- The ability to understand and apply written and verbal instructions.
Desirable
As a Transit Officer, these qualities are desirable:
- Basic First Aid Certificate.
- Knowledge of the Railway Act and Bylaws.
- Experience in the application of Criminal Law and the Rules of Evidence.
Special Requirements
Our Transit Officers also need to meet these special requirements to be recruited and remain employed:
- Passing a medical examination to confirm physical fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The ability to work shifts including weekends and public holidays.
- Integrity checks and police clearance.
- Compliance with our Public Transport Alcohol and Drugs Policy and Procedure including random testing.
- Meeting our dress code and corporate image and safety standards
- Have a current Western Australian "C" or "C-A" class drivers licence or equivalent. The licence must be held for the duration of employment and may need to be sighted by the Authority from time to time.
As a Transit Officer, you would be initially employed with a six-month probationary period and need to progress through the following training and qualifications within a prescribed time period:
- Certificate 3 in Transportation & Distribution (Rail Operations).
- Public Transport Authority Electrification Safety Awareness
- Basic First Aid Certificate
- Appropriate Public Transport Authority Safeworking Accreditation (Book of Rules).

Our Transit Officers are responsible and accountable for implementing and adhering to our Public Transport Authority People policies and procedures and ensuring Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Management principles and practices are maintained within the role. As a Transit Officer, your duties would be performed in accordance with our Code of Conduct and Values.
To ensure that operations and activities involving other employees, contractors, customers and the public are carried out safely, our Transit Officers must adhere to, and implement where appropriate, our Occupational Safety and Health policy and procedures.
Our Transit Officers are also responsible and accountable for ensuring that work activities are carried out in a way which is environmentally responsible. You also need to understand and implement the Environmental Protection policies and procedures that represent our Environmental Management System.
It is essential to adhere to and implement Railway Safety Management (AS4292) to the level applicable to a Transit Officer, which is detailed in the Railway Safety Management Responsibilities and Authorities Manual.
Our Transit Officers need to carry out tasks and functions consistent with their applicable skills, competence and training.
